Area of use

The credit card is the most frequently used means of payment by far. Still considered as unsafe a few years ago, the credit card is now becoming the preferred means of payment in this country as well. No other payment means comes near to the global preference of credit cards today. Visa alone has issued over 1.6 billion credit cards to date.

Processing

When a payment is made with a credit card, the card-issuing back (the issuer) is contacted online to have the card and amount checked by the authorization point. If a positive reply is returned, then the merchant receives an authorization approval and can provide the requested service to his customer or send the ordered merchandise. In the next step, the merchant must enter the authorized amount (or a partial amount for partial deliveries) and submit this to his/her merchant bank (the acquirer). This settlement operation (known as clearing) initiates the pay-out at the acquirer and the amount is then credited to the merchant's business account by the acquirer within the agreed period of time.

Requirements

A contract for the acceptance of credit cards must be concluded with an acquirer to enable customers to pay with credit cards at your business. In the so-called distance payment business, the type of business you conduct determines which contract conditions apply. The applicable regulations are clearly specified on an international level by the credit card companies.
